The latest figures from the Transportation Security Administration show a record number of passengers crossed through checkpoints in June.
On June 30, TSA screened roughly 2.9 million passengers, which according to the agency is the highest checkpoint throughput volume in history.
Jan Freitag, national director for hospitality market analytics at CoStar, said this points to robust summer travel demand from the American leisure traveler.
"Even though a mild recession is still in the CoStar forecast, consumers seem to take that forecast in stride and continue to spend on airfares and get away," he said. "Some of the travel patterns have shifted over the past year. Rather than favoring only resort locations, many travelers are now returning to urban destinations."
Additionally, as workers return to office and business travelers take the road again, Freitag said midweek air traffic is also returning to "more normal levels."
Commentary on the latest earnings calls from American Airlines, United and Delta indicate the airlines have achieved record-breaking quarters, which has been partially buoyed by higher revenues and stronger demand.
"Higher flyer numbers are a good indicator for hotel demand. The outlook for the remainder of the year remains healthy," Freitag added.
