Houston to Overtake Chicago in Population Size? Not So Fast, Says Greater Houston Partnership

Revised Growth Estimates Show the Windy City Ahead of Houston for the Foreseeable Future

Houston made headlines when it was announced the sprawling bayou metropolis would overtake Chicago as America’s third largest city by 2025. Only 404,000 residents separate the two cities today. Houston’s growth, however, has slowed to a trickle, and Chicago’s population continues to leak away. Based on last year’s growth, Houston will overtake Chicago, but not for another 34 years.
