Exponential growth of AI, cloud and digital services is changing the data centre landscape. Increasing demand for data centres in urban areas is evident, as can be seen from Google’s new Waltham Cross facility and Segro’s planned £1 billion Park Royal data centre in London. Such a trend, coupled with the scarcity of suitable land for development with adequate access to power, fibre connections, and other utility services, is driving a shift from broad single-storey buildings towards compact, multistorey designs.
