Liverpool City Council has named Kate Stansfield as its interim head of sustainability in a role that will see her spearhead efforts to decarbonise its buildings and operations in line with government net zero policy.

Having secured UKRI Net Zero Living grant funding this month, Stansfield will work with project partners to "deliver city-scale strategic plans and exemplar projects", in addition to building the sustainability team.

LCC said Stansfield will play a key role in creating a green economy after the city council was named the world's first "Accelerator City" for Climate Change. It wants to become a “demonstrable leader” on sustainability.

This activity will stretch across its work around buildings, energy, transport and waste, with LCC looking to work closely with City partners, businesses, investors and communities.

LCC said its interim sustainability lead will also play a key part in leading its contribution to the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Five Year Climate Action Plan.

Stansfield has worked in the private sector and in senior roles for local authorities and central government, including at Kent County Council, where she was head of commercial business operations. She also spent time at Turner & Townsend and Mace between 2006 and 2013, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Her previous jobs have seen her carry out strategic leadership, operational management, capacity building, commercialisation, transformation and growth, LCC added.

Stansfield said in a statement: “I am excited to be leading this important and diverse portfolio of work on behalf of Liverpool City Council and to working with key partners and stakeholders to de-carbonise the City of Liverpool.

"This will ultimately bring benefits to our Liverpool citizens including cleaner air and improved health, access to clean energy and heat and new green jobs."
