Onyx Equities co-founder and managing principal Jon Schultz has another passion besides his day job as a real estate investor, developer and landlord. He is also an avid podcaster whose shows attract an international following.

In "The Jon Schultz Podcast," the real estate executive doesn't focus on the industry, per se. Instead, he said, he tries to personalize his guests by interviewing them about the challenges they had to overcome to be successful and punch holes in the myth of being a so-called overnight success in business. The trailer for his podcast, available on Schultz's own YouTube channel, Apple and Spotify, sets the stage for what to expect.

"Every successful person got there by going through tough times," Schultz said in the trailer. "Success is a hard-ass teacher who likes to knock you around along that journey. You know, it takes real guts to not give up and keep going. We'll hear stories about failures and how these leaders flip the script to create success."

Schultz's company Onyx is headquartered in Woodbridge, New Jersey, and one of its headline-making deals was the $325 million acquisition of the Gateway Center office complex in downtown Newark, New Jersey, in December 2018.

Schultz told CoStar News that one of his favorite shows on his podcast centered on an interview with Chris Riccobono, a co-founder of Untuckit, the digital-native apparel seller that now has brick-and-mortar stores. Schultz's guests have ranged from Wendy Li, BlackRock's global chief investment strategist, to actor Steve Schirripa, who appeared in "The Sopranos" and is now in "Blue Bloods."

"If you like how Jon conducts himself and the thought processes he brings to real estate, he's got amazing podcasts. ... I highly recommend them, where he's on the other side of the mic interviewing very interesting celebrities, real estate executives, literally (from) around the world," New Jersey real estate attorney Ted Zangari said at a symposium last week at the Rutgers Business School Center for Real Estate where Schultz spoke. "It's gotten international."
