J.H. Snyder Co. is planning to build the first vertical shopping mall in Southern California near the Red Line station at Wilshire Boulevard and Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles. The center would be 300,000 square feet and seven stories tall and would include a cinema, restaurants and up to 100 retail stores. Howard Elkus, the architect, plans to make the building an architectural spectacle that itself will attract attention. The plan includes a spectacular interior atrium complemented by a large skylight and seven-story waterfall, glass rails and glass bridges. The design also plans for rooftop dining and parking spaces on six floors of the building. Work is planned to begin on the $200 million project next year, with delivery scheduled for 2011.
