Japanese apparel retailer Uniqlo is planning 11 store openings across the United States in 2026, including some in areas where it has closed spaces in recent years.

The company, part of Tokyo-based Fast Retailing, said it will add four stores in New York, two in the Chicago area and single stores in five other markets.

That follows similar moves in recent years to add to its store count in the United States, where there currently are 78 stores, according to a statement Monday.

The plan includes what Uniqlo describes as flagship stores in two high-profile retail corridors where the company closed large stores in recent years, San Francisco’s Market Street and Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

Those two stores will be the only flagships outside New York City, the statement said.

Founded in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1984, Uniqlo said it has more than 2,500 stores worldwide.

The 11 openings planned for next spring and summer follow similar expansions mapped out for 2024 throughout the United States and Canada and for this year in California and Texas.

The latest expansion round comes as Uniqlo celebrates 20 years since the opening of its first store in New York’s SoHo flagship on Broadway, and after Uniqlo last year struck a deal to buy its Fifth Avenue space in Manhattan.

“Celebrating 20 years in New York City is deeply meaningful for us, and 2026 marks an exciting next chapter for Uniqlo in the U.S.,” USA CEO Fuminori Adachi said in the statement. “These new stores are not only a milestone of our growth, but a way of honoring the customers who welcomed us two decades ago and continue to inspire everything we do. Our strategy is about thoughtful growth — opening the right stores in the right places — while ensuring every location reflects our customer’s voices and delivers a meaningful, high-quality experience.”

Some of the announced openings confirm previous reports of Uniqlo deals.

That includes deals at 600 N. Michigan Ave. in Chicago and 801 Market St. in San Francisco in returns to areas where Uniqlo closed stores the year after the arrival of COVID-19.

Uniqlo closed its Chicago store at 830 N. Michigan and its store at 111 Powell St. in 2021.

Uniqlo said it plans New York stores in Union Square, Bryant Park on Fifth Avenue, in the World Trade Center and in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, but the statement did not specify addresses.

The Union Square deal is at 860 Broadway, according to CoStar data and media reports.

In the other Chicago-area deal, Uniqlo said it has leased space in the Oakbrook Center mall in the western suburbs.

Uniqlo also said it will open in the Issaquah Commons shopping center near Seattle, the Annapolis Mall in Maryland, at 395-403 Washington St. in Boston and at 3262 M Street NW in Washington, D.C.
