A moratorium on evictions for rental arrears brought in as part of the Coronavirus Act 2020 and subsequently extended, was greeted with mixed reactions. Industry lobby groups such as the British Retail Consortium and UK Hospitality unsurprisingly hailed it as a lifeline for struggling occupiers in their time of need. Meanwhile, landlords’ representative groups such as the British Property Federation and the Property Owners Forum were less enthusiastic, fearing the system was rushed, indiscriminate and open to abuse.
