Nonfarm payrolls contract in Milwaukee, lagging most Midwest peers

Strong education and health services gains offset by sustained office-using job losses and consumer belt-tightening

According to the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, Milwaukee’s labor market added 3,800 nonfarm payrolls from March to April. However, the region lost 2,000 nonfarm payrolls, or 0.2%, year over year, marking the first annual contraction since March 2021 and a distinct slowdown compared to the region's average annual growth rate of 0.8% from 2015 to 2019.
