Manufacturing layoffs, white-collar employment pullbacks weigh on industrial and office markets entering 2026

Detroit’s labor market enters 2026 largely treading water. According to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data, total nonfarm employment rose by just 300 jobs year over year in December. That modest increase marks a steep deceleration from the 9,400 jobs added in 2024 and the nearly 24,000 added in 2023, and sits well below the pre-pandemic average of roughly 26,000 annual gains recorded between 2015 and 2019. Performance remains heavily nuanced across sectors.
