Though spirits in New York City are high and a full reopening is in sight, the city's unemployment rate remains elevated, according to the latest data from the New York State Department of Labor. New York City's unemployment rate was 4.2% in March 2020. Unemployment levels peaked locally in May 2020, with a city-wide unemployment rate of 20.2%. In the past 11 months, the rate has recovered by more than 9% and was 10.8% as of April 2021. However, job growth across New York City has not been consistent.
