Labor force contraction masks weakness in Puget Sound employment growth

Job gains remain sluggish as fewer residents participate in the workforce

Seattle’s unemployment rate decreased throughout the first half of the year. However, that decline reflects a shrinking labor force alongside slower hiring. With fewer residents counted in the workforce, the region has avoided a rise in the unemployment rate even as job growth has weakened.
