At Manhattan’s Moynihan Train Hall, visitors can pick up a cup of Blue Bottle Coffee or an Alidoro Italian sandwich. They can buy a Moleskine notebook or fresh flowers. And now they can shop a coveted clothing label that's gained popularity on social media.

Fashion brand Rag & Bone has chosen the 465-square-foot location, connected to Penn Station, the world's busiest transit hub, to open the first retail storefront dedicated to fast-growing Miramar, its “loungewear-meets-denim” line, according to real estate firm Vornado Realty Trust. The pop-up is expected run through the holiday season.

New York-based Vornado helped redevelop Moynihan Train Hall in a public-private partnership as part of its mega mixed-use Penn District project. Miramar's arrival is one of the latest signs that the grand hall and broader Penn Station complex, like many other train stations globally, have evolved from being merely a functional stop for travelers into a destination of sorts.

For instance, Moynihan Train Hall, redeveloped from the century-plus-old James A. Farley Post Office Building, also includes offices and counts Facebook parent Meta as its largest tenant.

With thousands of commuters coming through the train station daily, Vornado said the location “aligns perfectly” with Miramar’s “travel-friendly” apparel that looks like denim but wears like sweats, adding that the space bets on capturing attention and wallet share in the burgeoning retail corridor.

Rag & Bone on its website offers Miramar items including men's and women's denim-looking pants starting at $228, a women's vest for $348 and a midi dress for $388. Rag & Bone also has opened Miramar-dedicated pop-ups near the University of Colorado Boulder and at New Jersey’s American Dream mall, a Vornado spokesperson said, adding permanent stores are planned for the future.

The latest Miramar location comes as a recent JLL study found New York remains the top destination for luxury store openings nationwide even as high-end brands face economic uncertainty and tariff headwinds.

Moynihan Train Hall, named after the late New York Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, provides a modern concourse for Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road services, while Penn Station still serves NJ Transit commuter rail and Metropolitan Transportation Authority subway lines.

Vornado also redeveloped the nearby Penn 1 and Penn 2 office buildings, with direct access to Penn Station. They feature amenities including The Dynamo Room steakhouse; The Perch rooftop bar and lounge with a sweeping view of the city; and a Life Time health club and gym with seven pickleball courts.

The original Long Island Rail Road retail concourse now sports wider aisles, with tenants such as Shake Shack and Chick-fil-A, complementing the public plazas outside and giving visitors a reason to linger.

The Penn District project has helped revitalize an area that for years had been seen as "a forgotten corner of Manhattan, with aging buildings and declining retail spaces," Vornado previously said. The real estate investment trust is also planning an apartment tower in the area.

Penn Station itself is poised for a major makeover with the Trump administration in April taking control of a long-stalled redevelopment project from the state-run Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The federal government, through the Department of Transportation and in partnership with Amtrak, is planning to begin construction by the end of 2027.

Elsewhere in New York and around the world, transit hubs are cleaning up their images, offering more to do, while some are getting new life with other uses. Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan, for one, houses an Apple store along with a vibrant mix of dining and retail options.

In Japan, JR Central Towers & Station in Nagoya includes a 55-story office building totaling more than 1.1 million square feet; a 59-story, 774-room hotel; 10 restaurants; and a 50,000-square-foot convention center in the largest train station complex in the world, according to its design architect, KPF.

While no longer active as a train station, the abandoned Michigan Central Station in Detroit, in a sign of the adaptive reuse of historic properties, last year reopened as a technology and cultural hub following an extensive six-year renovation by Ford Motor Co.
