In a move that may open the door to many more retail relocations downtown, Borders Books signed a 30,000-square-foot lease at 100 Broadway in New York. The company, a former tenant of the World Trade Center, leased all of the available retail space at 100 Broadway. The 30,000-square-foot mega store to be located on the first, basement, mezzanine and 2nd floor represents the first Big Box retailer to sign a downtown lease since 9-11. The company is a leader among booksellers and operates 385 stores domestically and 25 internationally. Worldwide the company employs 32,000 people. Borders plans to open its new store in the fall of 2003. An Insignia/ESG team of Edward Goldman, Scott Gottlieb, Michael Laginestra and Gary Trock represented Hiro Real Estate, the landlord at 100 Broadway. Virginia Pittarelli of Madison HGCD LLC represented Borders.
