1. US inflation nudges upward again
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its Consumer Price Index for September on Friday, 10 days later than usual due to the federal government shutdown, reported The New York Times. Inflation rose 3% from the same time last year, which is only a slight increase from the 2.9% reported last month.
On a monthly basis, the Consumer Price Index showed that consumer prices overall increased by 0.3% while "core" goods and services rose by 0.2%, the newspaper reports.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitte said it's unlikely the government will release October's inflation report because of the shutdown.
2. Trump calls off trade negotiations with Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump announced he's ending ongoing trade negotiations with Canada after seeing a Canadian ad that features opposition to U.S. tariffs, CNBC reported. Trump claims the information in the ad is false and misleading.
The video ad includes an audio clip from former President Ronald Reagan's radio address from April 25, 1987. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute has claimed the use of the audio clip to be a misrepresentation of the former president's speech. Trump cited the foundation's claim in his post on social media that announced he's calling off trade talks with Canada.
The foundation did not say specifically what was misleading about the ad, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded by posting to X a YouTube link from the Reagan Library showing the same unedited video of Reagan's criticism of tariffs.
