Bond Yields Have Climbed, but Investors Still More Than Adequately Compensated for Investing in Real Estate

The backup in long-term government bond yields in recent weeks has many investors, including those in real estate, nervous. The nearly 100-basis-point increase since the start of the year caught the market by surprise, as the benchmark 10-year Government of Canada bond yield reached 1.50% by the week ending March 5. This was the highest level since before the coronavirus outbreak began in January 2020.
