Berkadia grows affordable housing team; Sands selects Southeast leader; Humphreys names architecture chief

Berkadia expands affordable housing investment

Berkadia added Steven Giovangelo as a senior director in its Boston office. In his new role, he will focus on investment services geared toward affordable housing, including development projects and purchase deals enabled through tax credits, the real estate services firm said. Giovangelo, whom Berkadia hired as it seeks to expand its tax credit syndication business, will primarily interact with developers in the Northeast, the firm said.

He joined Berkadia from Walker & Dunlop, where he served as a director of originations for the Northeast. Before that, Giovangelo served as vice president of originations at PNC Bank. Berkadia's affordable housing services include mortgage banking, investment sales and tax credit programs related to residential properties. 

Sands selects Southeast leader

Sands Investment Group appointed industry veteran Justin West as an executive managing director to oversee its Southeast regional operations. The Charleston, South Carolina-based company said West will lead its brokerage offices in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Nashville, Tennessee.

West has more than 21 years of commercial real estate experience, having served most recently as first vice president and regional manager at Marcus & Millichap in Florida. Prior to Marcus, he founded and led a startup commercial real estate firm known as West Commercial and held leasing and development roles at Duke Realty, now part of Prologis.

Humphreys names architecture chief

Dallas-based multifamily design firm Humphreys & Partners Architects appointed Robin Bellerby as chief architecture officer. Bellerby, who has 30 years of multifamily and related leadership experience, previously served as Humphreys' senior vice president of strategy and risk.

The company also said Brad Tillett has expanded his senior leadership role to encompass chief operating officer, and Chelsea Dora-Shibley has taken on new duties as chief interior design officer. Humphreys implemented its leadership succession plan after founder Mark Humphreys died three years ago and the recent shift of longtime President Greg Faulkner to the role of president emeritus.

PMA appoints energy practice director

Project Management Advisors hired David Swank as a vice president to lead its power and energy practice in Dallas. The Chicago-based commercial real estate consulting firm said Swank, who has more than 35 years of energy industry experience, will advise clients on power-related projects including infrastructure, development and operating matters.

Swank held prior leadership roles at firms including Exigent Energy Partners, EnXchange, Central Electric Cooperative, Chapman Management Group, GeKL Technologies and Grundy Electric Cooperative. Most recently at Exigent, he advised large real estate and infrastructure clients on power planning and deployment. His expertise includes grid operations, energy auditing, rate design and utility coordination. 

Perkins & Will grows Austin project design team

Global architecture and design firm Perkins & Will hired Micah Land as a senior project designer in its Austin, Texas, studio. The Chicago-based company said Land, who has more than two decades of experience, will work initially in the studio’s corporate, commercial, civic and cultural practice group. He will focus on designs for mixed-use, commercial, hospitality and other urban projects across the Southwestern region, Perkins & Will said.

Land studied sculpture and painting before transitioning to a career in construction design. He served most recently as a partner at Michael Hsu Office of Architecture and worked earlier at firms including Dick Clark + Associates, John Ronan Architects and STL Architects.
