With $3 million in cash and prizes up for grabs, Marcus & Millichap has the most brokers in this season's Battle of the Bids competition centered on predicting the winning results of a series of Ten-X auctions.
Ten-X says this year's Battle of the Bids field is the largest ever, drawing thousands of entries from some of the biggest brokerages in the world as well as several from independent brokers such as Aviva Sonenreich, managing broker of Warehouse Hotline brokerage.
Sonenreich said she feels good about her chances because of her experience buying, selling and leasing properties.
"We are participating in Battle Of the Bids and playing to win!!" Sonenreich said in an email.
Right out of the gate, Marcus & Millichap appears to be in a good position to rank high in the competition's company leaderboard. The California-based brokerage had the largest number of players register for the competition's first round, with 227. CBRE had the second most with 160 and Colliers the third-highest number of players with 143.
With the second season of Battle of the Bids underway, players already have started placing bets on what the final selling price will be of approximately 100 properties that are being auctioned off during the first round.
Based on early registration numbers, Ten-X said it expects a substantially higher number of players than the more than 13,000 people who participated in the first season last year. This year, in addition to CoStar Group clients, anyone who owned or brokered a commercial real estate property in the past three years can play.
Six Rounds of Auctions
Battle of the Bids is a six-round competition in which players place bets each round on the final sale prices of 10 properties to be auctioned on Ten-X, the online commercial real estate exchange owned by CoStar Group, publisher of CoStar News. Ten-X will give away prizes totaling up to $3 million, including a $1 million grand prize to the player who accumulates the most points across the six rounds.
Kidder Mathews investment sales broker Mike King took home the top prize in last year's competition.
Ten-X said it has added CoStar data to the property pages of building's being auctioned to players help predict prices. That data, along with additional market analytics, is incorporated into a new value calculator players can use.
Player can set their guesses for the first round up until the auction starts on Sept. 18. The first-round auction ends Sept. 21.
People who participate in each of the Battle of the Bids' six rounds will have the chance to accumulate points and therefore will have better odds to win the grand prize, Ten-X said.
As for Sonenreich, she is hoping her recent experience using the Ten-X auction platform will pay off. Last week, she listed for auction for the industrial building at 1591 W. Alameda Ave. in Denver. The property ultimately did not sell at auction because the reserve price was not met. But the process proved worthwhile, she said.
"Ten-X gave our listing unbelievable reach worldwide," she said.
