Tesla is gearing up to spend more than $700 million on interior finishes and new construction at its electric vehicle manufacturing campus in southeast Austin, Texas.

The company filed several applications for state permits this week to expand the Austin factory that opened last year at 1 Tesla Road.

One application is for a facility called Cathode that is expected to cost at least $260 million. The scope of the work, according to the application, is for “ground up and complete interior finish out of the [electric vehicle] manufacturing facility.” Cathode’s footprint is expected to be 321,186 square feet, according to the state filing. Construction on Cathode would start on Jan. 30 and continue through Dec. 18.

Another application is for a facility called Cell 1 with an estimated budget of $368 million. Cell 1 is expected to be 693,093 square feet with construction starting Jan. 23 and continuing through Feb. 12, 2024.

A 423,032-square-foot facility called Drive Unit has an estimated budget of $85 million. Construction on Drive Unit could begin as early as Feb. 6 and continue through Jan. 15, 2024.

Tesla could not be reached for comment about the applications.
