This period of low demand had led some hotels to renovate their properties, which could be a great way to surprise and delight guests when they return.
Many people are hopeful travel will return sooner rather than later with the rollout of more vaccines and COVID-19 case levels dropping, and some guests might return to see their favorite hotel has a new look.
Take the Don CeSar in St. Pete Beach, Florida, for example. The enormous pink hotel recently completed a three-year, multimillion-dollar renovation, which included a redesign of guestrooms and dining concepts.
Flip through this slideshow from the Tampa Bay Business Journal for a look inside. The redesign of Uncle Andy's Market — which features pink stripes on the ceiling and a floral wall — is my favorite of the renovated areas in the hotel.
The Sheraton Downtown Denver also was recently renovated. The $80 million renovation was completed on Feb. 1 and included a revamp of the guestrooms, lobby, public spaces and meeting spaces in the 1,374-room hotel.
For those owners who have the cash, this period of low demand seems like the right time to invest in property renovations. My colleague Sean McCracken wrote last week about how some hoteliers want to reset from the pandemic. Maybe a renovation could be a part of that reset?
