Retrofit projects have historically been viewed as more sustainable and economically viable options compared to their new-build brethren. However, the constraints of working with existing buildings usually means fewer social benefits can be provided. Therefore, in practice, environmental, economic and social priorities can often compete. The challenge for the sector is not a lack of ambition, but how to balance these factors in a way that delivers long-term value while maintaining community trust.
