GLOBAL REPORT—One shared name and history, two brands separated by the Atlantic Ocean.
As part of an ongoing series on the histories of hotel brands, Hotel News Now reporters Bryan Wroten and Terence Baker explored the pasts of the American Travelodge brand and Travelodge Hotels Limited, also known as Travelodge U.K. The brands started as one, evolving from a building contractor’s vision of developing hotels along the West Coast of the U.S. to take advantage of the growing ownership of automobiles and Americans’ newfound love for travel.
The two diverged decades later after an acquisition took the brand across the ocean to the United Kingdom, where it flourished and has become the nation’s largest independent hotel chain. Another transaction split the two, with Travelodge returning to the U.S. as a separate entity, before eventually falling under the umbrella of what is now Wyndham Worldwide.
