The American Institute of Architects has elevated Related Midwest executive Ann Thompson, a licensed architect in Illinois, to the College of Fellows.

Being named a fellow is the organization’s highest membership honor and recognizes an individual's "exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society," AIA said. It is given to only 3% of its members.

Thompson, Related Midwest's executive vice president of architecture and design, was recognized for her work leading the design and planning of Related Midwest’s mixed-use, mixed-income, affordable and luxury developments. Since joining the firm nearly three decades ago, Thompson has overseen the design of a diverse property portfolio that has earned her and the firm multiple awards from AIA, Landmarks Illinois, the Urban Land Institute and Crain’s Chicago Business, Related said.

“Ann's visionary leadership and her tireless advocacy for design excellence have had a tremendous impact on Chicago and beyond,” Related Midwest President Curt Bailey said in a statement. “Through her pioneering approach to architectural innovation and creative placemaking, she has redefined the fabric of urban communities. Ann is a luminary in the industry and Related Midwest is privileged to count her among our team.”

Related Midwest said that during her work in more than 30 neighborhoods, Thompson has helped create 5,000 residences, and over half qualify as affordable units.
