Stuart Machin, chief executive of M&S, commented on Thursday that Michael Gove, in refusing planning permission for the demolition and redevelopment of its flagship store on Oxford Street, had taken “an anti-business approach, choking off growth and denying Oxford Street thousands of new quality jobs… and a modern, sustainable, flag-bearing store”. Strong words, but understandable given the development had the support of Westminster City Council, the Greater London Authroity and Gove’s appointed inspector had recommended that planning permission be granted.
