After ending 2022 with the second-lowest unemployment rate in 20 years, the rate surged to 3.7% in January following the loss of more than 16,000 nonfarm jobs in San Diego, according to the latest jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The local jump from 2.9% is still below California’s statewide unemployment rate of 4.6%, although it’s the highest rate since February 2022.
