For years, sustainability certifications such as LEED and BREEAM have primarily focused on the emissions generated during a building’s use through heating, cooling, lighting and other energy demands, known as operational carbon. These emissions, which accumulate over time, can be mitigated through the implementation of energy-efficient systems and the integration of renewable energy sources, which have been the main focus of sustainability certifications until recently.
