Garry Marr, the chief Canada correspondent for CoStar News, was recognized for writing one of the best industry-focused stories last year in Canadian journalism by North America’s largest financial journalist organization.

Marr received an honorable mention from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing for a story showing the effect closing the border during the pandemic had on the little-covered practice by some Canadians of having goods that aren’t available in their home country shipped to U.S. border towns, where they drive to pick them up. In "Canadian Shoppers Grab Rare Chance To Descend on US Border Towns," he wove colorful anecdotes with economic and demographic statistics to show how the border being closed for nearly two years disrupted Canadian shoppers and American retailers.

Marr, based in Toronto, was one of three finalists in the trade category of the SABEW Canada contest. He writes about Canadian commercial real estate for CoStar News, an international news organization that specializes in the coverage of commercial real estate in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. CoStar News is published by CoStar Group, the largest provider of commercial real estate information.
