In 2022, amid a material acceleration in population growth, near record-low interest rates, and double-digit increases in home prices, it appeared that Canada was in the midst of a major housing shortage crisis. With an election looming, policymakers sprang into action as the federal government pledged to build as many as 500,000 new housing units a year to fill the supply gap.
