The development team of the Veterans Affairs Mental Health Clinic & Domiciliary in Tampa, Florida, faced several challenges while building the two-story clinic, including two hurricanes, unprecedented supply chain delays and increased costs for materials and labor.
The VA Mental Health Clinic & Domiciliary was still able to be completed on time because of the collaboration and efforts of real estate company Cullinan Properties, architectural firm Leo A Daly and Hoar Construction.
The purpose of this facility was a consolidation of the mental health services from three local VA hospital locations. This completed project brings all mental health services to one location for the veterans of the area.
The project was selected as the winner of the 2024 CoStar Impact Award for commercial development of the year in Tampa/St. Petersburg, as judged by a local team of real estate professionals familiar with the market.
About the Project: The $100 million clinic broke ground in late 2021 and began seeing patients in January 2024. The facility sits on 20 acres and replaces and consolidates services provided at three local hospitals into one location. The 100,000-square-foot complex has an attached 50,000-square-foot domiciliary wing with 60 patient rooms for overnight stays and services for the veterans.
What the Judges Said: “Not only is the VA Mental Health Clinic a large project that will have a positive economic impact on Tampa, but it is also a property that will serve a very important need for our military vets," said Matt Mitchell, senior managing director with Berkadia Real Estate Advisors.
They Made It Happen: Cullinan Properties was the developer, and the team included Michael Owens, Stephanie Webster, Bryce Barnes and Zach Rose. Hoar Construction was the general contractor and Leo A Daly was the architect.
