Its new-store pipeline has been scaled back, but Starbucks is moving ahead with firmer environmental measures at the stores it still plans to open. Over the next few years, the Seattle-based coffee company said it would strive for LEED certification at every new, company-operated store worldwide. That policy would compliment measures to purchase more renewable energy, replace incandescent lights with efficient LED bulbs and transition to cups made from 100 percent recycled material. It will also begin posting plaques in stores to explain green construction and design elements to customers. "We hope to not only inform customers about our environmental efforts, but to motivate them to make environmentally responsible choices once they leave our stores," Jim Hanna, Starbucks director of Environmental Impact, said last week.
