Amazon has completed a deal to let an ABP Property-owned warehouse in the Port of Cardiff as it continues to expand its footprint in the UK.

The online retailer has taken a 120,000-square-foot shed, understood to be DC2F, next to Cardiff's Queen Alexandra Dock. ABP said it adapted the site to meet Amazon's operational requirements. The unit opened in October ahead of the busy Christmas period.

ABP added that the Grade A facility, which sits on a circa 24-acre site, marks the first phase of its Cardiff Business Park development, where it is looking to attract leading logistics operators to the port environment.

Helen Thomas, head of property at ABP Property, said in a statement: "This deal is a fantastic way to round off what has been an exceptional year for ABP's property function in South Wales.

"It's a testament to the hard work and flexibility of our team, and highlights the scale of opportunity we can offer across all five South Wales ports; Cardiff, Newport, Barry, Swansea and Port Talbot."

The Port of Cardiff deal is one of a number of sites secured by Amazon over the past 18 months as the company ramps up its efforts to expand its warehouse portfolio in the UK.

It is understood that Amazon was the company behind a "freehold turnkey transaction" with Canadian real estate investment firm Epta Development Corporation and its development partner Stoford for a last-mile development in Avonmouth, Bristol, announced this month.

That last-mile logistics hub will measure 209,319 square feet and is targeting EPC A and BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard. It is understood that Amazon will take the building on its completion.

CoStar News also revealed in November that Amazon is in talks to buy the former Pets at Home warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent from Brookfield Properties for an undisclosed sum.

Other large deals indirectly completed by the company over the past year and a half include another in the South West, with logistics specialist GXO taking the whole of Panattoni's Avonmouth 885 facility for an Amazon contract.

In June, the retailer outlined plans for a £40 billion investment into the UK over the next three years, including four new fulfilment centres. It includes a major Northampton site, which is a £500 million project spanning 2.3 million square feet at Segro Logistics Park Northampton.
