Coffeehouse retailer, Peet's Coffee & Tea (Nasdaq: PEET), earned LEED Gold certification on its new coffee roasting facility in Alameda, CA. The roastery is the first LEED certified coffee roasting facility in the U.S. and the first LEED Gold certified building in the city of Alameda. Elements of the project that earned it LEED Gold certification include natural and energy efficient lighting, reduction of water usage by 50% through landscape design, irrigation, and low-flow fixtures; Reduction of gas usage by more than 85%; environmentally-sensitive HVAC systems; recycled content/materials used during construction; waste diversion to recycling of over 75% during construction; and close proximity to public transportation as well as preferential parking for fuel-efficient vehicles and bicycle storage.
