High-end grocery chain Whole Foods Market is set to open the first location of its smaller-format stores outside of New York City near the Northern Virginia headquarters of parent company Amazon.
A Whole Foods Daily Shop is slated to come to the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, on Oct. 23 at 1550 Crystal Drive. Whole Foods opened its first Daily Shop in September 2024 in the Lenox Hill neighborhood on New York City’s Upper East Side.
The retail concept that offers customers quick grab-and-go meals or weekly essentials is expected to be the largest of its style at 10,000 square feet. Whole Foods said last year it would launch the new store format. In doing so, Whole Foods joined other retailers that have opened smaller format stores to extend their reach to new and existing customers as shop space became scarcer and rents remained elevated.
The site of the latest Whole Foods Market Daily Shop is near Amazon’s second headquarters, or HQ2, in Northern Virginia. The location is slated to be the first Daily Shop location to offer Amazon pickup and returns. It sits in a strip set to become the effective high street of the redeveloped district now known as National Landing. It’s a roughly 10-minute walk from a more traditionally sized Whole Foods at 520 S. 12th St.
Real estate investment trust JBG Smith owns the building that will house the Daily Shop location. Brandon Taff, a senior vice president of commercial asset management at the REIT, said via an emailed statement that the opening makes “everyday living more convenient for residents, employees and visitors alike.”
Future Whole Foods Market Daily Shop locations are expected to arrive in Hoboken, New Jersey, and Brooklyn, New York’s Williamsburg neighborhood.
