Boston region loses jobs year over year

Nonfarm payroll is down 1.0% compared to same time last year

Boston's labor market has experienced a slowdown in early 2026, with nonfarm payroll falling 0.9% year over year as of February, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' most recent update. As employment shrunk, Boston's unemployment ticked up to 4.6%, slightly above the national average of 4.5%.
