Independence Landing opened last year in Tallahassee, Florida, providing affordable residential units for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
The 60-unit project at 3025 Schoolhouse Road was developed by Independence Landing Inc., a nonprofit organization that builds housing that empowers residents to lead independent and fulfilled lives. The development is the first of its kind in Tallahassee.
The project has been selected as the winner of the 2024 CoStar Impact Award for commercial development of the year in Tallahassee, as judged by a local team of real estate professionals familiar with the market.
About the Project: Independence Landing has garnered attention for its groundbreaking approach to inclusive housing with a focus on fostering independence and allowing residents to actively engage in work, pursue education or vocational training, or participate in local day training services off-campus.
What the Judges Said: "Independence Landing meets a unique need for any community and is a fresh concept" for the market that is full of multifamily projects claiming to be luxury, said T.J. Lewis, director of Gadsden County's Department of Economic Development.
They Made It Happen: Independence Landing Inc. owns the property that is managed by Royal American Cos.
