“The institution has made some mistakes and it lost us some confidence in the running of the institution and, therefore, the reasons for membership, but I think they are now behind us,” RICS president Nick Maclean says on a bonus episode of CoStar News’ Top CREdentials podcast, explaining what the group is doing to demonstrate its value to members.

Talking to CoStar News Managing Editor Paul Norman, Maclean outlines his aspirations for the chartered surveying body during his term as President with one of the main pieces of work decentralising power to local RICS councils to give them more control over things like budgets, and the ability to make changes if something is “not right or relevant”.

Maclean also gives his view on the potential implications of the Middle East war on global commercial real estate market, having worked in the region for 21 years, including setting up CBRE’s regional office.

He says: "It is very sad to see what is happening at the moment, but I don’t think this in any way will hold back the growth of the region long or medium-term.

"Once this is overcome, Dubai in particular and the UAE has had a remarkable habit of creating significant advancement from difficulties which weren’t of its own making."

He provides his thoughts on this year’s Mipim conference, arguing it was one of the best in a number of years due to an overall sense of positivity around capital market opportunities.
