These Properties Attract Buyers, Even in Their Third Century

Here Are the Five Oldest US Commercial Properties for Sale in CoStar's Listings

Reynolds Tavern, originally constructed in 1747 and a landmark among Annapolis, Maryland’s rich stock of historic properties, is one of the five oldest commercial properties for sale in the United States, according to CoStar's listings. It also has the distinction of being recently put under contract by the listing brokerage Hyatt Commercial in Annapolis.

The 18th-century, Georgian architectural-styled tavern is the oldest in Annapolis and one of the oldest in the U.S., and it still serves brew and traditional English tea daily.

“Given the history of the property and the fact that it was being operated as a restaurant, bed-and-breakfast we took a multifaceted approach to marketing,” Justin Mullen, president of Hyatt, told CoStar News. “We targeted local, regional food and beverage operators who wanted to take over operations and we did a large scale media push to inform the greater population who would be interested in the property from a historical perspective.”

The process has worked so far with the property having been on the market for fewer than 90 days.

“We are currently under contract with a buyer who owns multiple other historic properties and who is excited to be the next steward of this building,” Mullen said. “They are a high net worth family who are comfortable working within the constraints of multiple historic easements on the building.”

Reynolds Tavern is a relative contemporary of the other old properties for sale, according to CoStar. They include:

Riverstone 1730, a bed-and-breakfast in Upper Black Eddy, a suburb north of Philadelphia. Laurie Madaus of Kurfiss Sotheby's International Realty in New Hope, Pennsylvania, has the listing of the house built in 1727. Located on the banks of the Delaware River, Riverstone 1730 served as a frontier trading post, a Colonial-era tavern, and today a popular guest house.

Londregan, a six-unit apartment building in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, built in 1753. Bill Kane of Londregan Commercial Real Estate Group in New London, Connecticut, has the listing. With oil-fired, forced hot air and central air conditioning, the building has offices on the first floor and a total of six residential apartments on the second and third floors.

758 E. Main St., an office building in Middletown, New York, built in 1768. Jason McGovern of Keller Williams Hudson Valley Realty in Middletown has the listing. The building was once the Phillipsburg Mill House, credited as one of the mills that supported George Washington's Army during the Revolutionary War.

The Bradford-Loockerman House at 419 S. State St., an office building in Dover, Delaware, built in 1740. Tom Burns of Burns & Ellis Realtors in Dover has the listing. The property is two historical buildings joined together as one. One building was constructed circa 1740; the other early 1900s. The property has original hardwood floors throughout.
