Multifamily pro Jonathan Tucker promised to stay outside on an apartment balcony until he raised $100,000 to support minorities looking to get into and advance in the property management industry.
Tucker, executive vice president of operations and facilities with multifamily giant Cortland in Atlanta, moved back inside after meeting his goal, though he is still raising money after setting a new goal of $125,000.
Earlier this month, he moved his tent, sleeping bag and gear onto a balcony at Cortland at the Battery. That’s an apartment complex located in the mixed-use commercial development just outside Atlanta that surrounds Truist Park, the Atlanta Braves’ baseball stadium. It only took a few hours to meet the fundraising goal, and Tucker promptly headed back indoors.
The executive wanted to raise awareness of how few minorities work in his industry. The $106,000 he’s raised so far, plus any additional money, will be used to help professionals in underrepresented communities prepare for real estate jobs and prosper in the field.
He takes the issue seriously in his role as president of the Institute of Real Estate Management’s Georgia chapter. IREM provides scholarships and grants to minorities in commercial real estate.
