Privately held RLJ Development LLC partnered with Quadrangle Development Corp. of Washington, D.C. to submit an unsolicited bid to the city of Baltimore to acquire and develop two city-owned lots for the construction of a major convention hotel to be located adjacent to the Baltimore Convention Center. The announcement was made at a City Hall news conference hosted by Mayor Martin O'Malley. The proposed project by RLJ Development and Quadrangle is subject to competitive bids, and the review and approval process for the proposal will likely take several months. The first phase of the proposed project will involve the construction of a 750-room convention center hotel with approximately 75,000 square feet of meeting space, a variety of food and beverage outlets, support facilities and 1,000 underground parking spaces. Hilton Hotels Corp. will manage the hotel under the Hilton flag. The hotel will be connected to the Baltimore Convention Center by an aboveground, covered pedestrian walkway. In addition, should the City of Baltimore be selected for the super high-speed transport system known as Maglev, the proposed development will be able to accommodate a Maglev transit station.
