More than 20,000 jobs vanished last month, Labor Department says

Unemployment held steady despite widespread payroll declines

The nation lost roughly 23,000 jobs last month — mostly in public schools, retail and financial services, the U.S. Department of Labor said Friday. Despite the dip, the national unemployment rate stayed basically the same at 4.1%, down from 4.2% in June.
