While a wave of bankruptcies and store closures caused over 575,000 square feet of retail space to empty throughout Detroit, discount groceries, such as Dollar Tree and Dollar General, continue to expand. During the second quarter, when the coronavirus pandemic was moving rapidly through Detroit, both Dollar Tree and Dollar General collectively leased over 60,000 square feet of retail space at five locations, making them a bright spot in a difficult time for the retail industry.
