Buildings generated 87 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent of direct greenhouse gas emissions in the UK in 2019, representing 17% of the UK’s total emissions. Commercial buildings accounted for 14% of these, making them responsible for 2.4% of the UK’s direct emissions. As such, there is an urgent need to decarbonise the commercial real estate sector to achieve net zero.
