A CBRE division plans to cut 279 jobs tied to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio after a contract with a client ended, the real estate services firm told the Texas Workforce Commission.
J&J Maintenance Inc., doing business as CBRE Government & Defense Services, notified the state of the upcoming end of the contract and permanent layoffs at the medical center at 3551 Roger Brooke Drive in San Antonio. The company said there may be an opportunity for the workers to be hired by the new service provider.
Dallas-based CBRE, the world's largest real estate services firm, completed the purchase of J&J last year for $800 million in cash as part of a larger strategy to diversify its business. J&J provides engineering services, base support operations and facilities maintenance for the federal government.
“The planned layoffs at certain client facilities in San Antonio result from the client’s decision not to renew its facilities management contract with us for these sites," a CBRE spokesperson told CoStar News in a statement. "The layoffs are limited to facilities management employees working for that one client and no positions in CBRE corporate offices are affected. CBRE continues to operate a strong business in San Antonio," the spokesperson said.
Employees affected by the contract ending are expected to no longer be employed by Nov. 30. The workers have already been notified of these permanent layoffs, the firm told the commission in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letter.
The layoffs come after Texas Instruments also told state officials it would cut jobs at an aging facility in Dallas as part of a years-long manufacturing plan to build newer chips, as CoStar News reported. The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas expects Texas will add more than 180,000 jobs this year, per its latest forecast.
