Some predicted that COVID-19 would be catastrophic for the UK and Europe’s retail sector. Shutdowns and restrictions closed shopping centres and high streets overnight, severely reducing footfall and tenant sales. Over the course of 2020, retail underperformed by -47.6% in terms of total return, with the largest impact observed after the February 20 market crash.
