Poundland agrees to £597m takeover by Steinhoff

Poundland shares have soared by 12% after agreeing to a £597m takeover by South African retail conglomerate Steinhoff International.

Steinhoff, which already owns Harveys furniture chain and Bensons for Beds in the UK, will pay 222 pence in cash for each Poundland share, representing a premium of 13.3% to yesterday’s closing price of 196p.
