Westfield/Hammerson buy crucial Whitgift stake

The Croydon Partnership, the joint venture between Westfield and Hammerson, has bought the Whitgift Trust’s 50% long leasehold interest in the Whitgift Centre for an undisclosed sum. The stake, which related to what was the former Anglo Irish Bank’s interest in the centre, was the key remaining holding that needed to be acquired to make way for the partners’ £1bn redevelopment plans for Croydon town centre.

This transaction gives the Partnership ownership of the shopping centre, alongside its freehold owner, the Whitgift Foundation, and direct management control. The Whitgift Foundation is wholly supportive of the Partnership’s wider 2m sq ft plans for redevelopment of the retail town centre.
