Fireworks weren't alone in the sky this past Fourth of July holiday weekend.
For the third time in the past two months, the record for most people screened by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration in a single day was broken.
On July 7, 3.01 million people were screened by the TSA, besting the previous record of 2,996,193 people screened on June 23. The record was initially set this year on May 24, just ahead of Memorial Day weekend, at 2,951,163 people screened.
"Last year, July Fourth fell earlier in the week, but this year, the Thursday holiday enticed many to take to the beaches and join family events for a long weekend," said Jan Freitag, national director for hospitality market analytics at CoStar. "With summer firmly underway, this new screening record is just another indicator of the health on the higher end of the industry."
The popularity of air travel this summer continues to point to the opposite directions high-end and low-end guests are going in.
"Bifurcation continues to be the headline topic for owners and operators," Freitag said. "Preliminary monthly data for 29 days in June points to healthy [revenue per available room] growth for the higher classes and RevPAR decline for economy-class hotels."
