Kushner Cos. has kicked off its roughly $500 million redevelopment of an aged mall in New Jersey, where it plans to slash and modernize the retail space, add a grocery store and a public green, and construct 1,000 luxury apartments to create a contemporary open-air town center — a strategy that developers across the nation are taking.
