CoStar News reporter Garry Marr was recognized by North America’s biggest financial journalist organization for writing the best industry-focused story last year in Canadian journalism.

Marr, who is based in Toronto, received a gold medal from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing for a story showing how rising property values around Canada’s largest city are spilling over the U.S. border into Buffalo, New York.

In “Canadians Shuffle Off to Buffalo Looking for Better Property Returns,” Marr illustrates the phenomenon through the eyes of investors trying to find an apartment building inexpensive enough to allow a solid return. In describing their search, Marr covers vacancy rates and loan-to-value ratios, while quoting brokers and executives to explain the phenomenon.

Marr, who writes about Canadian commercial real estate for CoStar News, won in the trade category of the SABEW Canada contest. The finalists were announced earlier this year.

Marr joined CoStar from the National Post, where he spent 18 years covering real estate, with his work appearing in most of the country’s major markets via the Postmedia Network, Canada’s largest newspaper chain.

CoStar News is an international news organization that specializes in the coverage of commercial real estate, examining economic and property implications of events across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. CoStar News is published by CoStar Group, the largest provider of commercial real estate information.
