Tens of thousands of people moved out of the Bay Area during the pandemic, as the availability of remote working lured them to depart for more affordable locations, both within California and further afield. This trend was especially prevalent in Silicon Valley, where Santa Clara County’s population fell by 26,000 people between 2020 and 2021, and by a further 16,500 people between 2021 and 2022.
